I don't generally photograph kids. Not that I don't like kids - I was a teacher for 7 years, I like kids! I've just focused primarily on babies this past year, and pretty much everything in my studio is baby sized. But people are always asking me if I photograph kids, so I thought I'd give it a go with back to school mini sessions. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a "studio" photographer (in that I LOVE to use props), so knew a back to school theme would be perfect as I'd be able to get lots of cute props for the kids to sit on & play with, and I could shoot in my studio space rather than outside, which I prefer.
With props purchased and my set designed, I put out a casting call and got a HUGE response. It was hard choosing models with all the adorable entries, but choose I did, and I had a great time photographing lots of cute kiddos and their siblings. I couldn't even believe how well behaved all of the kids were, and how EASY they were to direct! While the actual paid mini sessions didn't get the response I'd hoped for, I'm glad I tried out the whole themed mini-session idea as it helped me realize that I can photograph kids in my studio with a little planning. I hope to do more themed minis in the future, and to meet and photograph kids of all ages (though I still plan to focus on babies:)
Hope all of my little models had a great time taking pictures, and are enjoying the first few weeks back at school - thanks for being so cute :)
